Resolving the Optical Emission Lines of Lyα Blob ‘b1’ at Z = 2.38: Another Hidden Quasar

We have used the SINFONI near-infrared integral field unit on the VLT to resolve the optical emission line structure of one of the brightest (LLyα ≈ 10 erg s−1) and nearest (z ≈ 2.38) of all Lyα blobs (LABs). The target, known in the literature as object ‘B1’ (Francis et al. 1996), lies at a redshift where the main optical emission lines are accessible in the observed near-infrared. We detect l...

Mapping the Lyα Emission around a z∼6.6 QSO with MUSE: Extended Emission and a Companion at a Close Separation

We utilize the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope to search for extended Lyα emission around the z∼6.6 QSO J0305−3150. After carefully subtracting the point spread function, we reach a nominal 5σ surface-brightness limit of SB5σ=1.9×10 ergs cmarcsec over a 1arcsec aperture, collapsing fivewavelength slices centered at the expected location of the red...

Upper Limits on the X-ray Emission of “Uranium” Stars

A paper by Qian & Wasserburg suggests the optical absorption lines of uranium observed in the spectra of ultra-metal-poor stars (defined as [Fe/H] <-3) arise from contamination from a supernova in a binary star system. Assuming the binary survived the explosion, a collapsed compact object may be present and implying potential accretion processes with accompanying X-ray emission. Upper limits on...

Emission Line Spectroscopy of a Damped Lyα Absorbing Galaxy at Z = 0.437

We present Keck/LRIS spectra of a candidate damped Lyα (DLA) galaxy toward the QSO 3C196 (zem = 0.871). The DLA absorption system has a redshift of zDLA = 0.437, and a galaxy at 1.5 ′′ from the QSO has been identified in high resolution imaging with WFPC2/HST. We have detected emission lines of [O II] λ3727, Hβ, [O III] λ5007, Hα and [N II] λ6584 at the absorption redshift. Based on the emissio...

Upper limits on the pulsed radio emission from the Geminga pulsar at 35 & 327 MHz

We report here our observations at 35 MHz and 327 MHz made in the direction of the γ–Ray pulsar Geminga. Based on the observed absence of any significant pulsed emission from this source above our detection thresholds at the two frequencies, we obtain useful upper-limits for the average flux to be 75–100 mJy at 35 MHz, and 0.2–0.3 mJy at 327 MHz. We discuss a few possible reasons for the “radio...
